Introduction to Kannada Script

The Kannada script (ಕನ್ನಡ ಲಿಪಿ) is an abugida of the Brahmic family, used primarily to write the Kannada language, one of the major Dravidian languages of South India. The script is also used to write other languages like Tulu, Konkani, and Kodava.

Kannada script consists of 49 letters, divided into:

  • 13 vowels (ಸ್ವರಗಳು - svaragaḷu)
  • 34 consonants (ವ್ಯಂಜನಗಳು - vyanjanagaḷu)
  • 2 special characters (ಯೋಗವಾಹಕಗಳು - yōgavāhakagaḷu)

Kannada Vowels (ಸ್ವರಗಳು)

Vowels in Kannada are called 'svaragaḷu'. They can stand independently and also combine with consonants to form syllables.

Kannada Consonants (ವ್ಯಂಜನಗಳು)

Consonants in Kannada are called 'vyanjanagaḷu'. When written alone, they include an implied short 'a' sound. To write a pure consonant without this vowel, a special diacritic called 'halant' (್) is added below the letter.
